44th International Conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods
15–17 June 2021
Online
Overview
With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that BEM/MRM44 should not take place as scheduled in Valencia, Spain, but take place as an online event instead.
The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK and the University of Mississippi, USA, represented by Prof. Alexander Cheng.
The conference, which started in 1978, attracts high-quality papers that report further advances in techniques that reduce or eliminate the type of meshes associated with finite elements or finite differences, for instance.
Opening of the Conference
The conference was opened by Prof A. Cheng who welcomed the delegates to the event.
George Green Medal
Prof A. Cheng conducted the George Green Medal Ceremony and awarded this year’s medal to Prof Dragan Poljak, from the University of Split, Croatia. Subsequently, Professor Poljak gave a Keynote Address on “Integral Equation Methods in Computational Electromagnetics (CEM)”.
The George Green Medal was established by the University of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi, USA and the Wessex Institute and is now supported by Elsevier. It is in honour of the man who single-handedly set up the basis for the modern Boundary Element Method, amongst other achievements.

Conference Sessions
The papers presented during the conference were focused on the following topics:
- Advanced formulations
- Computational methods
- Heat and mass transfer
- Fluid flow modelling
- Electrical Engineering and electromagnetics
- Structural mechanics applications
Q&A Live Zoom Sessions
Conference delegates were invited to participate in a Q&A Live Zoom Sessions on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June 2021. These friendly sessions were a great opportunity for participants to interact with each other and ask questions to authors about their papers.
EABE Editorial Board Meeting
The Editorial Board Meeting of the International Journal of Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements took place over Zoom on Tuesday 15th June. Members of the board had the opportunity to discuss recent developments in how the publication is progressing. Of special interest was the continuous increase in the impact factors and the number of submissions. The papers in the Journal also attract a substantial number of citations.
Conference Publication
Accepted papers presented at this conference are published in 131 of the WIT Transactions on Engineering Sciences (ISSN 1743-3533). Papers included in this volume are available Open Access in the eLibrary of the Wessex Institute (https://www.witpress.com/elibrary) from where they can be freely downloaded by any interested parties.
Closing of the Conference
We are very sorry that we were not able to meet our delegates in person this year.
We would like to thank the delegates for participating in the event and look forward to meeting them at the next conference in the series.
