Air Pollution 2015

Air Pollution 201523rd International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution
1 - 3 June, 2015
València, Spain

Organised by:
Wessex Institute, UK
University of the West of England, UK

Overview

Air Pollution 2015 is the 23rd Annual Meeting in the successful series of international conferences organised by the Wessex Institute dealing with Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution.

The series started in Mexico (1993) and continued in Barcelona (1994); Halkidiki (1995); Toulouse (1996); Bologna (1997); Genova (1998); San Francisco (1999); Cambridge, UK (2000); Ancona (2001); Segovia (2002); Catania (2003); Rhodes (2004); Cordoba (2005); New Forest (2006); Algarve (2007); Skiathos (2008); Tallinn (2009); Kos (2010) Malta (2011), A Coruna (2012), Siena (2013) and Split (2014).

These meetings have attracted outstanding contributions from leading researchers from around the world. The papers selected for presentation and included in the Conference Proceedings have been permanently stored in the WIT eLibrary as Transactions of the Wessex Institute (see http://library.witpress.com). These collected papers provide an invaluable record of the development of science and policy pertaining to air pollution.

The conferences in this series have discussed and considered many important air pollution issues and the international nature of the attendees has ensured that the conference findings and conclusions enjoy a wide and rapid dissemination amongst the air pollution science and policy communities. Air pollution issues remain one of the most challenging problems facing the international community. The series has demonstrated the wide spread nature of the air pollution phenomena and has explored in depth the impacts of air pollution on human health and the environment.

The series also recognised, at a very early stage, that science alone will not improve a polluted atmosphere. The scientific knowledge derived from well designed studies needs to be allied with further technical and economic studies in order to ensure cost effective and efficient mitigation. In turn, the science, technology and economic outcomes are necessary but not sufficient. Increasingly, the conference has recognised that the outcome of such research needs to be contextualised within well formulated communication strategies that help policy makers and citizens to understand and appreciate the risks and rewards arising from air pollution management. Consequently, the series has enjoyed a wide range of high quality papers that develop the fundamental science of air pollution and an equally impressive range of presentations that places these new developments within the frame of mitigation and management of air pollution.

This important conference brings together contributions from scientists from around the world to present recent work on various aspects of air pollution phenomena. Notable in each of the conferences in this series has been the opportunity to foster scientific exchange between participants. New collaborations amongst scientists, and between scientists and policy makers or regulators have arisen through contacts made in this series. Each meeting has provided a further opportunity for identifying new areas of air pollution science demanding collaborative investigation.

The conference papers deal with a rich variety of topics. The presentation of case studies of specific regions and cities, including those in emerging countries are particularly encouraged.

Conference Topics

  • Air pollution modelling
  • Monitoring and measuring
  • Air quality management
  • Indoor air pollution
  • Aerosols and particles

Disaster Management 2015

Disaster Management 20154th International Conference on Disaster Management and Human Health: Reducing Risk, Improving Outcomes
20 - 22 May, 2015
Istanbul, Turkey

Organised by:
Wessex Institute, UK

Overview

The fourth International Conference on Disaster Management is being reconvened following the success of the previous three meetings, held at Wessex Institute in the New Forest in 2009, the University of Central Florida in Orlando, USA in 2011 and A Coruña, Spain in 2013.

This series of conferences originated with the need for academia and practitioners to exchange knowledge and experience on the way to handle the increasing risk of natural and human-made disasters. Recent major earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods and other natural phenomena have resulted in huge losses in terms of human life and property destruction. A new range of human-made disasters have afflicted humanity in modern times; terrorist activities have been added to more classical disasters such as those due to the failure of industrial installations for instance.

It is important to understand the nature of these global risks to be able to develop strategies to prepare for these events and plan effective responses in terms of disaster management and the associated human health impacts.

The conference provides a forum for the exchange of information between academics and practitioners, and a venue for presentation of the latest developments. The corresponding volume of WIT Transactions on the Built Environment containing the papers presented at the meeting has been published in paper and digital format and widely distributed around the world. The papers are also archived in the WIT elibrary (http://library.witpress.com) where they are available to the international community.

19 - 21 May, 2015
Istanbul, Turkey

Oganised by:
Faculty of Architecture, Istanbul Technical University, Turkey
Wessex Institute, UK

Overview

The seventh International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning builds upon a series that started in 2003 in Skiathos, Greece, followed by other meetings in Bologna (2005), Algarve (2007), Cyprus (2009), New Forest, UK (2011), and Kos, Greece (2013).

The Conference addresses subjects of regional development in an integrated way as well as in accordance with the principles of sustainability. It has become apparent that planners, environmentalists, architects, engineers, policy makers and economists have to work together in order to ensure that planning and development can meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations.

Problems related to development and planning affect rural and urban areas, and are present in all regions of the world. Accelerated urbanisation has resulted in deterioration of the environment and loss of quality of life. Urban development can also aggravate problems faced by rural areas, such as forests, mountain regions and coastal areas, among many others. Taking into consideration the interaction between different regions and developing new methodologies for monitoring, planning and implementation of novel strategies can avoid solutions leading to environmental pollution and non-sustainable use of available resources.

Energy saving and eco-friendly building approaches have become an important part of modern development, which places special emphasis on resource optimisation. Planning has a key role to play in ensuring that these solutions as well as new materials and processes are incorporated in the most efficient manner.

Sustainable Development and Planning 2015 aims to bring together scientists and other stakeholders from across the globe to discuss the latest scientific advances in the field. The conference will also seek and highlight developments in managerial strategies and assessment tools for policy and decision makers.

Complex Systems 2015

Complex Systems 2015International Conference on Complex Systems in Business, Administration, Science and Engineering
12 - 14 May, 2015
New Forest, UK

Organised by:
Wessex Institute, UK
The Open University, UK
Overview
The Conference aims to bring together practitioners of a variety of disciplines interested in developing and discussing the new approaches for resolving complex issues that cannot be formulated using conventional, mathematical or software models. Applications in modelling complex issues using multi-agent technology and similar distributed approaches, which have achieved credible results, are welcomed.

The Conference is particularly focused on methods for resolving complex issues that exhibit some of the following attributes:

Connectivity - A system consists of a large number of diverse components, referred to as Agents, which are richly interconnected.

Autonomy - Agents are not centrally controlled; they have a degree of autonomy but their behaviour is always subject to certain laws, rules or norms.

Emergence - Global behaviour of a complex system emerges from the interaction of agents and is therefore unpredictable but not random; it generally follows discernible patterns.

Nonequilibrium - Global behaviour of a complex system is far from equilibrium because frequent occurrences of disruptive events do not allow the system to return to the equilibrium between two such events.

Nonlinearity - Relations between agents are nonlinear, which occasionally causes an insignificant input to be amplified into an extreme event (butterfly effect).

Self-Organisation - A system is capable of selforganizing in response to disruptive events, a feature termed Adaptability. Self-organisation may also be initiated autonomously by the system in response to a perceived need, a feature termed Creativity.

Co-Evolution - A system irreversibly coevolves with its environment.

High level dynamics of such systems, which are usually expressed through the frequent occurrence of unpredictable disruptive events, make conventional optimizers, batch schedulers and resource planning systems unworkable.

Complex Systems occur in an infinite variety of problems, not only in the realm of physical sciences and engineering, but encompassing fields as diverse as the economy, environment, humanities, social and political sciences. Further examples are given in the list of topics which although incomplete gives an idea of the themes to be covered by the meeting.

The conference objective is to bring together researchers, developers and users of complex systems, aiming to form a community directed at solving complex issues in novel ways.

Wessex Institute, UK

Overview

CMEM 2015 is the 17th International Conference in this well established series on Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements. These successful meetings provide a unique forum for the review of the latest work on the interaction between computational methods and experimental measurements.

This well known series of conferences started in Washington DC (1981) followed by a meeting on board the Queen Elizabeth II Ocean Liner (1984); Porto Carras, Greece (1986); Capri (1988); Montreal (1991); Siena (1993); Capri (1995); Rhodes (1997); Sorrento (1999); Alicante (2001); Sani Beach, Greece (2003); Malta (2005); Prague (2007); the Algarve (2009), the New Forest, UK (2011) and A Coruña, Spain (2013).

The principal intention of the conference has always been to provide to the international technical and scientific community, an opportunity to discuss the interaction between experimental measurements and computational methods with all associated topics. Foremost consideration and importance are devoted to their reciprocal and advantageous integration.

The continuous improvement in computer efficiency, coupled with their diminishing costs and the rapid development of numerical procedures have generated an ever-increasing expansion of computational simulations that permeate all fields of science and technology. As these procedures continue to grow in magnitude and complexity, it is essential to be certain of their reliability, ie to validate their results. This can be achieved by performing dedicated and accurate experiments, which have undergone a constant and enormous development. At the same time, current experimental techniques have become more complex and sophisticated so that they require the exploitation of computers, both for running experiments as well as acquiring and processing the resulting data.
