Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that Water Pollution 2020 should not take place as scheduled, in Valencia, Spain, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, represented by Professor Stefano Mambretti, Member of the WIT Board of Directors and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain represented by Jose Sergio Palencia Jiménez (Chairman) and F. Jose Mora Mas (Honorary Chairman).

The meeting has been held in a variety of different locations every two years since it started in Southampton in 1991. The Conference provides a forum for discussion amongst scientists, managers and academics from different areas of water contamination. The wealth of information exchanged in this international meeting continues to be of great benefit to all involved with water pollution problems.

The environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads discharged into natural water bodies require the formation of a framework for regulation and control. This framework needs to be based on scientific results that relate pollutant discharge with changes in water quality. The results of these studies allow the industry to apply more efficient methods of controlling and treating waste loads, and water authorities to enforce appropriate regulations regarding this matter. Environmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary. Engineers and scientists working in this field must be familiar with a wide range of issues and, in view of the scarcity of available data, it is important that experiences are shared on an international basis.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened with a presentation of the Wessex Institute followed by a welcome address by Conference Chairman Jose Sergio Palencia Jiménez, who explained the purpose and great benefits of this year’s online event.

FRIAR 2020 - Post Conference Report

7th International Conference on Flood and Urban Water Management

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that FRIAR 2020 should not take place as scheduled, in Valencia, Spain, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, and the Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy represented by Professor Stefano Mambretti, Member of the WIT Board of Directors and the Birmingham City University, represented by Professor David Proverbs.

The conference, which started in London, UK in 2008 is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates.

The 7th meeting took place at a time when the challenges of flooding are continuing to escalate across the world. For example, recent flooding across Africa affecting countries including Sudan, Senegal and Niger has caused hundreds of fatalities and impacted copious communities.

In the UK earlier this year and just prior to the COVID-19 period of lockdown, three storms predicated major flooding across England, Scotland and Wales.

Flood risk management research continues to advance our understanding, drawing on expertise from a wide range of disciplines.

The increase in global flooding is a consequence of a variety of complex and integrated factors, including climate change.

The series of conferences has demonstrated the widespread nature of flood hazards and has contributed to the evolving understanding of the science and policy contexts of flood risk management and has acknowledged that flooding remains the most damaging natural hazard globally.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened with a presentation of the Wessex Institute followed by a welcome address by Chairman Professor David Proverbs, who explained the purpose and great benefits of this year’s online event.

The Sustainable City Conference addresses the multidisciplinary components of urban planning, the challenges presented by the increasing size of the cities, the number of resources required and the complexity of modern society.

The conference was opened with a presentation of the Wessex Institute followed by an opening address by the Conference Chairman, Professor Stefano Ricci, to the Sustainable City Conference Series, welcoming delegates to this year’s online event.

10th International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that HPSM/OPTI 2020 should not take place as scheduled, in Prague, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK and the University of A Coruna, Spain, represented by Prof Santiago Hernandez; the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, represented by Prof Patrick de Wilde and the Czech Technical University, Czech Republic, represented by Prof M Sejnoha.

The conference follows the success of a number of meetings on structures and materials and on optimum design that originated in Southampton as long ago as 1989. As the meetings evolved they gave rise to the current series, which started in Seville in 2002. The meeting provided a friendly and useful forum for the interchange of ideas and interaction amongst researchers, designers and scholars in the community to share advances in the scientific fields related to the conference topics.

Closing of the Conference

We are very sorry that we were not able to meet our delegates in person this year.

WIT is aware that one of the benefits of the conferences is the networking among colleagues and the only reason for implementing this strategy is the exceptional circumstances created by the covid-19 crisis. Thus, to allow the authors to maintain that capability, delegates registered at HPSM/OPTI 2020 who had their paper accepted for publication, will be able to attend the next conference in the series (or a different conference of their choice devoted to similar topics that takes place prior to that) free of charge, and if they wish, make an oral presentation of their published paper.

AFM 2020 - Post Conference Report

13th International Conference on Advances in Fluid Mechanics

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that AFM 2020 should not take place as scheduled in Prague but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK and the University of A Coruna, Spain, represented by Professor Santiago Hernandez.

The conference, which started in New Orleans (1996), is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The conference covers a wide range of topics, including basic formulations and their computer modelling as well as the relationship between experimental and analytical results. The emphasis is on new applications and research currently in progress.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened by Prof Santiago Hernandez who welcomed the delegates to the event.

Invited Presentations

There were a series of invited lectures on advanced topics of research and applications, as follows:

• “A posteriori methods with automatic dissipation adjustment for the simulation of compressible flows”, presented by X. Nogueira, from the University of A Coruna, Spain.
• “Equilibrium of a journal bearing: a simplified CFD-Analytical coupled approach”, presented by F. Concli, from Free University of Bolzano, Italy.
• “Measurement and modeling of suspended sediment dynamics in watercourses”, presented by J. Kramer Stajnko, from the University of Maribor, Slovenia.
• “Transport of a single spherical particle in low Reynolds number linear shear flows: experiment and modelling”, presented by P. Vorobieff, from the University of New Mexico, USA.
• “Experimental study for wind energy harvesting based on the aeroelastic excitation of a semi-circular cylinder” presented F. Nieto, from the University of A Coruna, Spain

Papers presented at this conference are published in Vol. 128 of the WIT Transactions on Engineering Sciences (ISSN 1743-3533). A few papers were selected for publication in the International Journal of Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements, which provides the scientific community with a forum to present the interaction between the complementary aspects of computational methods and experimental measurements, and to stress the importance of their harmonious development and integration.
