Sustainable Development and Planning 2020 - Post Conference Report

11th International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that Sustainable Development and Planning 2020 should not take place as scheduled in Bilbao, Spain, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, represented by Dr Stavros Syngellakis.

The conference, which started in Skiathos, Greece, in 2003 is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The variety of topics covered by the conference reflects the complexity of problems related to development and planning, which affect rural and urban areas that are present in all regions of the world.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened by Professor Santiago Hernández who welcomed the delegates to the event.

Invited Presentations

There were a series of invited lectures on advanced topics of research and applications, as follows:

• “Health and alternative tourism development for the island of Crete”, by Dr Dimitris Prokopiou, University of Piraeus, Greece.
• “The Potential impact of information systems tackling the Sustainable Development Goal 10 on the dimensions of health care and gender” by Prof Roman Brandtweiner, Vienna University of Economics & Business, Austria.
• “Cultural heritage and interoperable open platforms: strategies for knowledge, accessibility, enhancement and networking” by Prof Danila Longo, University of Bologna, Italy.

The papers presented during the conference were classified under the following headings:

• Sustainable Development conceptualizations
• Water and flora management
• Information technologies for sustainable development and planning
• Sustainable energy, mobility and industry

Conference Publication

Papers presented at this conference are published in Vol. 241 of the WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment (ISSN 1743-3541). Papers presented at the meeting are available Open Access in the eLibrary of the Wessex Institute (https://www.witpress.com/elibrary) from where they can be freely downloaded by any interested parties.

A few papers were selected for publication in the International Journal of Energy Production and Management, International Journal of Transport Development and Integration and International Journal of Environmental Impacts.

Closing of the Conference

We are very sorry that we were not able to meet our delegates in person this year.

WIT is aware that one of the benefits of the conferences is the networking among colleagues and the only reason for implementing this strategy is the exceptional circumstances created by the covid-19 crisis. Thus, to allow the authors to maintain that capability, delegates registered at Sustainable Development and Planning 2020 who had their paper accepted for publication, will be able to attend the next conference in the series (or a different conference of their choice devoted to similar topics that takes place prior to that) free of charge, and if they wish, make an oral presentation of their published paper.

Urban Transport 2020 - Post Conference Report

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that Urban Transport 2020 should not take place as scheduled in Bilbao, Spain, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, represented by Dr Stavros Syngellakis.

The conference, which started in Southampton, UK in 1995 is well established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The variety of topics covered by the conference reflects the complex interaction of the urban transport systems with their environment and the need to establish integrated strategies.

Opening of the Conference

The conference programme opened with a presentation of the Wessex Institute followed by an opening address of the Urban Transport Conference Series welcoming delegates to this year’s event.

Invited Presentations

There were a series of invited lectures on advanced topics of research and applications, as follows:

• “Characteristics of shared mobility in Bangalore”, by Mrs Gargi Ghosh, Sky Group, India
• “Urban mobility and public spaces quality: The case of Granada, Spain” by Dr Alejandro Grindlay, University of Granada, Spain
• “Convenience of running-gear health monitoring systems to reduce unavailability in
  metropolitan railways” by Dr Riccardo Licciardello, University of Rome 'La Sapienza', Italy

A few papers were selected for publication in the International Journal of Transport Development and Integration. This Journal covers the subjects of all transportation modes and the general topic of transport systems, with particular emphasis on their integration and harmonisation

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that Eco-Architecture 2020 should not take place as scheduled in Bilbao, Spain, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, represented by Dr Stavros Syngellakis, and the University of Alcala de Henares, Spain, represented by Professor Pilar Chias.

The conference, which started in Ashurst Lodge, UK in 2006 is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The variety of topics covered by the conference reflects the challenges and new opportunities for contemporary architecture. These are a result of advances in design and new building technologies, as well as the development of new materials.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened by Professor Pilar Chias who welcomed the delegates to the event.

There were a series of invited lectures on advanced topics of research and applications, as follows:

HPSM/OPTI 2020 - Post Conference Report

10th International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that HPSM/OPTI 2020 should not take place as scheduled, in Prague, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK and the University of A Coruna, Spain, represented by Prof Santiago Hernandez; the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, represented by Prof Patrick de Wilde and the Czech Technical University, Czech Republic, represented by Prof M Sejnoha.

The conference follows the success of a number of meetings on structures and materials and on optimum design that originated in Southampton as long ago as 1989. As the meetings evolved they gave rise to the current series, which started in Seville in 2002. The meeting provided a friendly and useful forum for the interchange of ideas and interaction amongst researchers, designers and scholars in the community to share advances in the scientific fields related to the conference topics.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened by Prof S. Hernandez and Prof M. Sejnoha who welcomed the delegates on behalf of WIT and their own institutions.

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that AFM 2020 should not take place as scheduled in Prague but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK and the University of A Coruna, Spain, represented by Professor Santiago Hernandez.

The conference, which started in New Orleans (1996), is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The conference covers a wide range of topics, including basic formulations and their computer modelling as well as the relationship between experimental and analytical results. The emphasis is on new applications and research currently in progress.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened by Prof Santiago Hernandez who welcomed the delegates to the event.
