10th International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials
2–4 September 2020
Online
Overview
With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that HPSM/OPTI 2020 should not take place as scheduled, in Prague, but take place as an online event instead.
The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK and the University of A Coruna, Spain, represented by Prof Santiago Hernandez; the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, represented by Prof Patrick de Wilde and the Czech Technical University, Czech Republic, represented by Prof M Sejnoha.
The conference follows the success of a number of meetings on structures and materials and on optimum design that originated in Southampton as long ago as 1989. As the meetings evolved they gave rise to the current series, which started in Seville in 2002. The meeting provided a friendly and useful forum for the interchange of ideas and interaction amongst researchers, designers and scholars in the community to share advances in the scientific fields related to the conference topics.
Opening of the Conference
The conference was opened by Prof S. Hernandez and Prof M. Sejnoha who welcomed the delegates on behalf of WIT and their own institutions.
Invited Presentations
There were a series of invited lectures on advanced topics of research and applications, as follows:
- “Calibration of the fracture locus of an AlSi10 alluminium alloy”, presented by F. Concli from Free University of Bolzano, Italy.
- “A Multi-phase nanostructured 60SI2MN disc spring by a novel austempering process”, presented by D. O. Northwood, from University of Windsor, Canada.
- “Modeling of viscoelastic response of unidirectional fibrous composites made of basalt carbon fibers”, presented by M. Sejnoha, from Czech Technical University, Czech Republic.
- “Mechanical properties of Jute fiber using heat treatment method”, presented by K. Takemura, from Kanagawa University, Japan.
- “Co-heating test as tool for reduction of energy performance GAP in buildings” presented by H. Krstic, from the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Croatia.
- “Impact response of aircraft structures enhanced with crushable energy absorbers crashworthiness analysis and passenger injury assessment”, presented by J. Diaz Garcia, from the University of A Coruna, Spain.
- “Study of pedestrian comfort in a three span stress ribbon footbridge”, presented by L. Romera, from the University of A Coruna, Spain.
- “Optimization of a timberhall structure”, presented by S. Kravanja, from University of Maribor, Slovenia.
- “A design methodology for engineering structures featuring automatic design concept generation by constraints programming and objective ranking by multi-attribute evaluation”, presented by C. Lopez, from Flanders Make VZW, Belgium.
- “Role of the social dimension on the sustainability-oriented maintenance optimization of bridges in coastal environments”, presented by V. Yepes, from the Politechnic University of Valencia, Spain.
- “Dynamic response optimization of steel jackets for offshore wind turbines with fatigue and time-dependent constraints”, presented by I. Couceiro, from the University of A Coruna, Spain.
Conference Sessions
The papers presented during the conference were classified under the following headings:
- Advanced materials
- Advanced structures
- Applications of optimum structural design
Conference Publication
Papers presented at this conference are published in Vol. 196 of the WIT Transactions on the Built Environment (ISSN: 1743-3509). Papers presented at the meeting are available Open Access in the eLibrary of the Wessex Institute (https://www.witpress.com/elibrary) from where they can be freely downloaded by any interested parties.
Closing of the Conference
We are very sorry that we were not able to meet our delegates in person this year.
WIT is aware that one of the benefits of the conferences is the networking among colleagues and the only reason for implementing this strategy is the exceptional circumstances created by the covid-19 crisis. Thus, to allow the authors to maintain that capability, delegates registered at HPSM/OPTI 2020 who had their paper accepted for publication, will be able to attend the next conference in the series (or a different conference of their choice devoted to similar topics that takes place prior to that) free of charge, and if they wish, make an oral presentation of their published paper.
We would like to thank the delegates for participating in the event and look forward to meeting them at the next conference in the series.
