Materials Characterisation 2021 - Call for Papers

 Materials Characterisation 2021

10th International Conference on Computational Methods and Experiments in Material and Contact Characterisation

7–9 July 2021

Online

Introduction

The aim of the conference is to facilitate interaction between the research and industrial community and discuss the latest developments in this rapidly advancing field. The meeting responds to the demand for high-quality production for both industry and consumer, which has led to rapid developments in materials science and engineering. This requires the characterisation of the properties of the materials.

Of particular interest to industry and society is the knowledge of the surface treatment and contact mechanics of these materials to determine the in-service behaviour of components subject to contact conditions. Modern society requires systems that operate at conditions that use resources effectively. In terms of components durability, the understanding of surface engineering wear frictional and lubrication dynamics has never been so important.

Current research is focussed on modifications technologies that can increase the surface durability of materials. The characteristics of the system reveal which surface engineering methods should be chosen and as a consequence, it is essential to study the combination of surface treatment and contact mechanics.

Combinations of different experimental techniques as well as computer simulation methods are essential to achieve a proper analysis. A very wide range of materials, starting with metals through polymers and semiconductors to composites, necessitates a whole spectrum of characteristic experimental techniques and research methods.

The conference is a result of a series of meetings that started as early as 1993 in Southampton on contact mechanics and previous meetings on the wider field of material characterisation dating from the 2003 conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The papers presented at all those conferences are permanently archived in the eLibrary of the Wessex Institute (www.witpress.com/elibrary) where they are easily accessible in Open Access format to the international scientific community.

AFM/MPF 2021 - Call for Papers

 AFM/MPF 2021

11th International Conference on Advances in Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on Multiphase and Complex Flow

6–8 July 2021

Online

Introduction

This conference is the merging of two successful events organised by the Wessex Institute, the International Conference on Advances in Fluid Mechanics (AFM) and the International Conference on Computational and Experimental Methods in Multiphase and Complex Flow (MPF), which originated in New Orleans (1996), and Orlando, Florida (2001) respectively.

The field of fluid mechanics is vast and has numerous and diverse applications. The conference covers a wide range of topics, including basic formulations and their computer modelling as well as the relationship between experimental and analytical results.

Innovation in fluid-structure approaches including emerging applications as energy harvesting systems, studies of turbulent flows at high Reynold number, or subsonic and hypersonic flows are among the usual topics of the conference that is also open to new applications and research currently in progress.

The emphasis on multiphase flow in this conference is because fluid dynamics processes in nature are predominantly multi-phased, i.e. involving more than one phase of a component such as liquid, gas or plasma. The range of related problems of interest is vast: astrophysics, biology, geophysics, atmospheric processes, and a large variety of engineering applications.

Multiphase fluid dynamics have generated a great deal of recent interest, leading to many notable advances in experimental, analytical, and numerical studies in this area. While progress is continuing in all three categories, advances in numerical solutions are likely the most conspicuous, owing to the continuing improvements in computer power and the software tools available to researchers. Progress in numerical methods has not only allowed for the solution of many practical problems but also helped to improve our understanding of the physics involved. Many unresolved issues are inherent in the very definition of multiphase flow, where it is necessary to consider coupled processes on multiple scales, as well as the interplay of a wide variety of relevant physical phenomena.

The papers – like others presented at Wessex Institute conferences – are part of the WIT Transactions in Engineering Sciences series and are archived online in the WIT eLibrary (www.witpress.com/elibrary), where they are freely available to the international scientific community.

Urban and Maritime Transport 2021 - Call for Papers

 Urban and Maritime Transport 2021

27th International Conference on Urban and Maritime Transport and the Environment

16–18 June 2021

Online

Introduction

The International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment has successfully been reconvened for 27 years, always attracting a wide international spread of delegates, well established as the premier event of its type.

Meanwhile, the substantial growth of maritime shipping has resulted in large transported quantities around the world, creating a demand for innovative solutions for ports and fleets, well reflected by the success of the First International Conference on Maritime Transport, held in 2019.

These two apparently parallel topics meet in the transport and environmental management of coastal cities, both being affected positively and negatively by landslide and seaside traffic.

The continuing requirement for better urban transport systems and the need for a healthier environment creates a fertile environment for original ideas, innovative approaches and applications of advanced technologies, their tests and evaluations in practice. Moreover, there is a growing need for integration with IT systems and applications to improve safety and efficiency.

Maritime Transport is highly interconnected with rail, road and air services, as well as inland waterways. Each of these must therefore operate complimentary of one another to maximise efficiency and respond rapidly to variable economic and political contingencies.

The variety of topics covered by the conference reflects the complex interaction of the transport systems with their environment and the need to establish integrated strategies. The aim is to arrive at optimal socio-economic solutions while reducing the negative environmental impacts of transportation systems typically by interdisciplinary approaches. Therefore, the conference will focus on multidisciplinary research and development, as well as operational experiences.

The conference started in Southampton in 1995; continuing in Barcelona (1996); Acquasparta, Italy (1997); Lisbon (1998); Rhodes (1999); Cambridge, UK (2000); Lemnos, Greece (2001); Seville (2002); Crete (2003); Dresden (2004); Algarve (2005); WIT Campus in the New Forest (2006); Coimbra (2007); Malta (2008); Bologna (2009); Limassol (2010); Pisa (2011), A Coruña (2012), Kos (2013), Algarve (2014), Valencia (2015), Crete (2016), Rome (2017), Seville (2018), Aveiro (2019) and Bilbao (2020).

BEM/MRM 44 - Call for Papers

 BEM/MRM 44

44th International Conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods

15–17 June 2021

Online

Introduction

The annual conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods (BEM/MRM), now in its 44th version, is to take place in Valencia, Spain.

Since starting in 1978, the Conference has attracted high-quality papers that report further advances in techniques that reduce or eliminate the type of meshes associated with finite elements or finite differences, for instance.

Theoretical developments and new formulations have been reported, helping to expand the range of applications as well as the type of modelled materials in response to the requirements of contemporary industrial and professional environments. This ability to evolve is reflected in the history of the Conference and has ensured the success of the meetings as well as the establishment of a community of stakeholders.

As design, analysis and manufacture become more integrated, the chances are that software users will be less aware of the capabilities of the analytical techniques that are at the core of the process. This reinforces the need to retain expertise in certain specialised areas of numerical methods, such as BEM/MRM, to ensure that all new tools perform satisfactorily within the aforementioned integrated process.

The maturity of BEM since 1978 has resulted in a substantial number of industrial applications of the method; this demonstrates its accuracy, robustness and ease of use. The range of applications still needs to be widened, taking into account the potentialities of the Mesh Reduction techniques in general.

This well-established conference acts as a forum to discuss new ideas and critically compare results before the developed solutions and tools are released to end-users.

The meeting welcomes all stakeholders interested in the methods and particularly the participation of young researchers. Their new contributions have been the principal reason why the conference has continued to evolve.

The meetings since 1978 have produced a collection of edited volumes in which the major developments in the field have been represented. This valuable series has been offered in digital form since 1993, with all papers available Open Access in the Wessex Institute’s eLibrary website (www.witpress.com/elibrary), where they can be easily accessed and downloaded for free.

STREMAH 2021 - Call for Papers

 STREMAH 2021

17th International Conference on Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture

26–28 May 2021

Online

Introduction

STREMAH 2021 is the 17th International Conference on Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture. The meeting has taken place on a regular basis since the first conference started in Florence (1989) and continued in Seville (1991); Bath (1993); Crete (1995); San Sebastian (1997); Dresden (1999); Bologna (2001); Halkidiki (2003); Malta (2005); Prague (2007); Tallinn (2009); Tuscany (2011), the New Forest, UK home of the Wessex Institute (2013), A Coruna, Spain (2015), Alicante, Spain (2017) and Seville, Spain (2019).

The importance of retaining the built cultural heritage cannot be overstated. Rapid development and inappropriate conservation techniques are threatening many heritage unique sites in different parts of the world. This conference aims to provide the knowledge required to formulate regulatory policies, to ensure effective ways of preserving the architectural heritage. The series has been most successful and the conference continues to attract a wide range of high-quality contributions since it started in 1989.

The meeting addresses a series of topics related to the historical aspects and the reuse of heritage buildings, as well as technical issues on the structural integrity of different types of buildings, such as those constructed with materials as varied as iron and steel, concrete, masonry, wood or earth. Restoration processes require the appropriate characterisation of those materials, the modes of construction and the structural behaviour of the building. This knowledge can be gained through a series of material characterisation techniques, preferably via non-destructive tests. Modern computer simulation can provide accurate results demonstrating the stress state of the building and possible failure mechanisms affecting its stability. Of particular importance are studies related to their dynamic and earthquake behaviour aiming to provide an assessment of the seismic vulnerability of heritage buildings.

This conference brings together contributions from scientists, architects, engineers and restoration experts from all over the world dealing with different aspects of heritage buildings.

Papers contained in the volumes in the series have been published in both paper and digital format, and widely distributed around the world. They are also permanently archived in the Wessex Institute eLibrary where they are available to the international community (https://www.witpress.com/elibrary).

ERES 2021 - Call for Papers

 ERES 2021

13th International Conference on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures

26–28 May 2021

Online

Introduction

ERES 2021 is the 13th international conference in the series on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures organised by the Wessex Institute. The Meeting provides a unique forum for the discussion of basic and applied research in the various fields of earthquake engineering relevant to the design of structures.

Major earthquakes and associated effects such as tsunamis continue to stress the need to carry out more research on those topics. The problems will intensify as population pressure results in buildings in regions of high seismic vulnerability. A better understanding of these phenomena is required to design earthquake resistant structures and to carry out risk assessments and vulnerability studies.

The problem of protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including heritage buildings. The type of highly specialized retrofitting employed to protect the built heritage is an important area of research.

This conference will address these problems continuing to expand on the development of previous meetings in the series. Papers presented at ERES are an invaluable record of the state of the art in this field. Most of them are now freely available on the Wessex Institute eLibrary (www.witpress.com/elibrary) where they are a permanent record demonstrating the quality of the research presented at the ERES conference series.

The conference began in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1997, followed by Catania, Italy (1999); Malaga, Spain (2001); Ancona, Italy (2003); Skiathos, Greece (2005); Bologna, Italy (2007), Cyprus (2009), Tuscany, Italy (2011), A Coruña, Spain (2013), Opatija, Croatia (2015), Alicante, Spain (2017) and Seville, Spain (2019).

Introduction

CMEM 2021 is the 20th International Conference in this well-established series on Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements. These successful meetings provide a unique forum for the review of the latest work on the interaction between computational methods and experiments.

This series of conferences started in Washington DC (1981) followed by a meeting on board the Queen Elizabeth II Ocean Liner (1984); Porto Carras, Greece (1986); Capri (1988); Montreal (1991); Siena (1993); Capri (1995); Rhodes (1997); Sorrento (1999); Alicante (2001); Sani Beach, Greece (2003); Malta (2005); Prague (2007); the Algarve (2009), the New Forest, home of the Wessex Institute, UK (2011), A Coruña, Spain (2013), Opatija, Croatia (2015), Alicante, Spain (2017) and Seville, Spain (2019).

The principal objective of the conference has always been to provide to the international technical and scientific community, an opportunity to discuss the interaction between experimental measurements and computational methods with all associated topics. Foremost consideration and importance are devoted to their reciprocal and advantageous integration.

The continuous improvement in computer efficiency, coupled with diminishing costs and the rapid development of numerical procedures have generated an ever-increasing expansion of computational simulations that permeate all fields of science and technology. As these procedures continue to grow in magnitude and complexity, it is essential to validate their results to be certain of their reliability. This can be achieved by performing dedicated and accurate experiments, which have undergone constant and enormous development. At the same time, current experimental techniques have become more complex and sophisticated so that they require the intensive use of computers, both for running experiments as well as acquiring and processing the resulting data.
