7th International Conference on Disaster Management and Human Health: Reducing Risk, Improving Outcomes

Overview

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that Disaster Management 2021 should not take place as scheduled, in Rome, Italy, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was co-organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, represented by Prof Giorgio Passerini and the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy, represented by Professor Fabio Garzia, Mara Lombardi and Honorary Chairman Massimo Guarascio.

The conference, which started in The New Forest UK, in 2009, is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. This series of conferences originated with the need for academia and practitioners to exchange knowledge and experience on the way to handle the increasing risk of natural and human-made disasters. Recent major earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods and other natural phenomena have resulted in huge losses in terms of human life and property destruction. A new range of human-made disasters have afflicted humanity in modern times; terrorist activities have been added to more classical disasters such as those due to the failure of industrial installations, for instance. It is important to understand the nature of these global risks to be able to develop strategies to prepare for these events, and plan effective responses in terms of disaster management and the associated human health impacts.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened by Prof Giorgio Passerini, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, who welcomed the delegates to the event on behalf of all Chairs.

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that SAFE 2021 should not take place as scheduled, in Rome, Italy, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was co-organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, represented by Prof Giorgio Passerini and the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy, represented by Professor Fabio Garzia, Mara Lombardi and Honorary Chairman Massimo Guarascio.

The conference, which started in Rome, Italy in 2005, is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The purpose of the Conference is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the most recent research and industrial developments in the theoretical and practical aspects of safety and security engineering. It covers areas such as crisis management, security engineering, natural disasters and emergencies, terrorism, IT security, man-made hazards, risk management, control, protection and mitigation issues, and many others.

Opening of the Conference

The conference was opened by Prof Fabio Garzia, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, who welcomed the delegates to the event on behalf of all Conference Chairs.

The programme opened with a Keynote by Prof Massimo Guarascio:

With the main objective to preserve our delegates’ wellbeing, but also with the belief that the scientific community should not be stopped, WIT decided that BIM 2021 should not take place as scheduled, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, but take place as an online event instead.

The conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, UK, represented by Professor Juan Casares, the University of the West of England, UK, represented by Dr Lamine Mahdjoubi and the University of Alicante, Spain represented by Dr Antonio Galiano Garrigos.

The conference, which started in Bristol, UK in 2015 is well-established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The variety of topics covered by the conference includes the modern construction industry and built environment disciplines that have been transformed through the development of new and innovative BIM tools and techniques. These have fundamentally altered the manner in which construction teams operate; the processes through which designs are evolved; and the relationships between conceptual, detail, construction and life cycle stages.

The conference series, which started in Rio, Brazil in 2000 is well-established and always attracts a wide, international spread of delegates. The challenge of planning sustainable contemporary cities lies in considering the dynamics of urban systems, exchange of energy and matter, and the function and maintenance of ordered structures directly or indirectly supplied and maintained by natural systems. The task of researchers is to improve the capacity to manage human activities, pursuing welfare and prosperity in the urban environment. Any investigation or planning on a city ought to consider the relationships between the parts and their connections with the living world. The dynamics of its networks (flows of energy matter, people, goods, information and other resources) are fundamental for an understanding of the evolving nature of today’s cities.

The conference, which started in Southampton, UK in 1993 is well established and always attracts a wide international spread of delegates. The aim of the conference is to facilitate interaction between the research and industrial community and discuss the latest developments in this rapidly advancing field. The meeting responds to the demand for high-quality production for both industry and consumer, which has led to rapid developments in materials science and engineering. This requires the characterisation of the properties of the materials.
